Death Certificate Apostille

The international certification of death for foreign use, assuming the country is a member of the Hague Convention, is a process in which a stamped certificate is attached to your document. Once this is completed, your document is now acceptable for prevention to that country.

Many people think just because a local “official” has signed a death certificate that it may be valid for an apostille. It’s very important to make note of the following. In order for the death certificate to be valid for apostille, the signature of the County Clerk-Recorder, County Assessor, Department of Health Services (DHS), or California CDHS.

Check to See if your California Death Certificate is Valid

The State of California has very specific process in the Certification of Death Certificates for foreign use. Death Certificates issued by any Funeral Home are not valid for an Apostille no matter where they were issued.

Please Carefully Examine Your Document to See if it’s Eligible Using this Three Step Check List:

Step 1. Is the Death Certificate Document of California Origin?

  • Is your death certificate issued by one of the 58 counties in California?
  • Is your death certificate issued within the last 5 years?

If Yes, your document may be acceptable. If No, call our office for possible options.

Step 2. Does my Death Certificate Document Have the Acceptable Signature to Be Legalized?

What is the Official’s title who signed your death certificate?

On the death certificate, located below the county official signature line, is the title of the “Official”, is the title either:

  • County Clerk/Recorder
  • Clerk/Recorder
  • Assessor/Recorder
  • Department of Health Services (DHS/CDHS)

If any of these 4 officials have signed your death certificate, this document is acceptable be legalized for either Apostille or authentication.

If Not there’s one More Step that must be taken for your Death Certificate to be eligible for an Apostille. Follow the instructions below

Any document executed by County Health Officers and County Local Registrars can be authenticated only if the document is first certified by the county clerk/recorder. Please obtain signature verification from the County clerk in which the Death Certificate was issued. We can obtain the County signature verification for you. Please call us for a quote and details. Additional time will be required and service fees charged.

Step 3. Is the Country that I am Getting the Legalization for a Member of the Hague Convention?

If Yes, this Document eligible for an “Apostille.” If Not, the document is considered an “Authentication” which will need additional processing time and cost. Please call for quote.

How Does One Start the Process of Obtaining an Apostille or Authentication?
